Interview at Donau Drei 3FM

Excerpt from the website "Donau Drei 3fm" on the subject of PTSD

Sandra's self-help groupSandra's husband is a veteran. He was deployed on six missions, including in the Balkans, Afghanistan and Pakistan - where he had to witness a lot of suffering. This triggered PTSD in him. Sandra met him when he was already suffering from the illness, even though he was diagnosed later. PTSD has affected their lives ever since: barbecuing, going to the cinema, shopping together - these things are not possible for the two of them. But they have found ways to deal with the illness.

At first, Sandra dealt with the situation herself. But in October 2022, she decided to share her story on an Instagram account.

"I started the Instagram page to show other relatives that you can learn to deal with it, that you can cope with it. (...) It's important to me that no one has to deal with it alone. We are here, we exist and no one has to go through it alone."

There she explains how to deal with PTSD and everyday life from the perspective of a wife. Sandra herself has found that those affected and their families are far too often left alone and receive no help.

Newspaper article "IVZ"

After many unpleasant experiences while taking our assistance dog Max (in training) with us while shopping, my husband decided to make this problem public.

    April 2024

We have reached a milestone in our work to raise awareness about #PTSD and #assistancedogs. A good two years ago, we had an unpleasant shopping experience in our town in a supermarket of a large four-letter chain.

My husband took Max with him to the store as his assistance dog (in training) and a short time later we found ourselves in an unpleasant discussion about whether Max was allowed into the store or not.

He had to explain to a fairly long queue why he had Max, and he did so in a state of maximum excitement.

This very extreme event set my husband back weeks, with the consequence that for a good two years I have done almost all small and large purchases on my own.

At that time, my husband filed a complaint with the supermarket chain and gave an interview to our local newspaper about this grievance.

After this report was published, a reader contacted us and wanted to help us. He contacted @Pfotenpiloten and @netto to make this problem visible and to remedy it.

That's why we now had an appointment at @netto, which was the first supermarket in our town to willingly agree to put up a clearly visible sign saying "Assistance dogs welcome".

We would like to thank our helper, who does not wish to be named, the @pfotenpiloten and @netto from the bottom of our hearts for this touching support. And Ms. Beimdiek from the @IVZ for the great reporting.

This milestone is significant. For us, it means quality of life, recognition, inclusion and everyday life with PTSD.
